BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation increased to approximately 3.3% in August 2026, up from 2.9% in July. The month saw a notable rise in energy costs. Eurostat announced the preliminary estimate on Sept. 1. Previously, inflation had been 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Consumer prices grew by 0.4% from July, according to the harmonised index of consumer prices.

Euro area inflation reaches 3.3% on August energy gains
Euro area inflation rose to 3.3% in August as energy prices recorded the strongest increase.

Energy components experienced the largest annual increase among the primary categories, reaching 14.3%, compared to 10.3% in July. Monthly energy prices also jumped by 2.9%. The inflation rate for services eased slightly to 3.0% from 3.3% in July. Conversely, inflation for non-energy industrial goods rose from 0.9% to 1.2%. Food, alcohol, and tobacco inflation remained steady at 1.2%, with no change from the previous month.

Adjustments that exclude certain categories showed smaller fluctuations in August. The inflation rate excluding energy stayed at 2.2%, unchanged from July. When removing energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco, the rate decreased to 2.4% from 2.5%. Excluding energy and unprocessed food, inflation declined to 2.1% from 2.2%. These calculations reflect consumer price changes after specific elements are stripped from the overall index.

Rise in energy costs contrasts with easing services inflation

Inflation displayed significant variation across the 21 member countries of the euro area in August. Lithuania experienced the highest estimate at 5.8%, followed by Cyprus at 5.2% and Bulgaria at 5.1%. Spain’s rate was 4.5%, Belgium 4.2%, and Luxembourg 4.0%. On the lower end, Estonia’s inflation stood at 1.3%, Malta at 1.9%, and Finland at 2.4%. Germany registered a 2.9% rate, while France was at 2.7% and Italy at 3.2%.

Monthly price movements also varied among countries. Belgium saw a 2.1% increase in prices, Luxembourg 1.8%, and Cyprus 1.5%. France and Bulgaria each recorded a 0.8% rise from July. Ireland, Spain, and Malta experienced a 0.6% increase. Finland’s prices fell by 0.4% month-on-month, whereas Slovakia’s prices remained unchanged. Germany’s prices increased by 0.2%, and Italy’s by 0.1%.

The euro area now includes 21 countries

Following Bulgaria’s accession on Jan. 1, 2026, the euro area expanded to encompass 21 nations. Data up to December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member configuration. From January 2026 onward, figures account for the new 21-country group. The European Union statistical framework applies a chain-index formula to accommodate changes in the euro area’s composition. Consequently, the August flash estimate captures the current 21-member structure of the single-currency zone.

The August figures remain preliminary, with comprehensive harmonised consumer-price data scheduled for release on Sept. 17, 2026. The subsequent flash estimate for September’s inflation will be published on Oct. 2. The index tracks shifts in prices paid by households for consumer goods and services. Annual inflation compares prices with those of the same month in the previous year, while monthly inflation measures month-to-month changes.
