Despite this overall decline, border authorities have warned that human smuggling networks continue to operate heavily overcrowded, unsafe vessels across open waters. International humanitarian groups have emphasized that maritime crossings remain dangerous, with mortality records indicating significant loss of life along Mediterranean routes throughout the year.
