Focus is now shifting toward the upcoming plug-in solar regulations set to take effect on August 27, 2026. The new framework permits certified microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket. Eligible products are limited to delivering no more than 800 watts of alternating current output. They must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2 and be safe to operate within the local distribution network. Devices such as plug-in batteries or systems that store imported household electricity are excluded from the rules.
Safety regulations regulate plug-in connectivity
This legal update amends the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 alongside the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, a day after ministers approved it. The amendment introduces a specific exception to restrictions on plugs intended for generating equipment. Each plug must be certified by a notified body to meet relevant BS 1363 standards. While product approval covers the entire UK, the electricity safety revision applies specifically to England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim specification outlines standards for electrical design, mounting methods, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. A technical study evaluated representative plug-in solar products connected to domestic wiring under controlled conditions. Results showed stable operation with no sustained unsafe energisation or thermal issues. The study also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, guiding the development of the UK-specific safety standards for market approval.
Retailers prepare for certified products
A government consultation attracted 466 responses from businesses, specialists, regulators, and the public. Over 85% of participants supported the interim specification, with many also endorsing the plug amendment. Contributors included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some raised concerns about outdated household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear user instructions. Others emphasized the importance of differentiating plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.
Retail chains such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are actively preparing for the launch of this new product category. The system is designed to serve households unable to install traditional rooftop solar, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor space. It is important to note that systems using this new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. From that date onward, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect via a standard household socket. The total solar capacity recorded in June does not account for systems utilizing this new plug-in framework.
