FULDATAL, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – Germany is bolstering its capabilities to defend against unmanned aircraft as rapid technological advances challenge current systems. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that counter-drone efforts will remain a long-term priority for the Federal Police. His remarks came during a visit to the police aviation unit in Fuldatal, Hesse, on Thursday. He highlighted an ongoing technological race between defensive systems and those seeking to bypass them.

Germany expands counter-drone force and security network
Germany expands counter-drone security across airports, policing and technology research.

The Federal Police established its specialized counter-drone unit in December 2025 for nationwide deployment. According to the latest government data, the unit currently consists of roughly 70 personnel. Plans are underway to expand the team to 300 officers by the end of 2026. Additionally, the Interior Ministry has approved an increase from four to eight operational sites, aiming to enhance coverage and response times across the country.

Germany has also prioritized deploying counter-drone equipment at major airports managed by the Federal Police. These include Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn, Stuttgart, and Leipzig/Halle. The government has procured mobile detection and defence systems intended for use at aviation hubs. Due to security considerations, authorities have not publicly disclosed specifics of these systems. Responsibility for drone defence at airports rests with police, while state police oversee areas outside the facilities.

Federal police unit undergoes nationwide expansion

This expansion follows an August 4 security breach at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany. Federal prosecutors revealed that a drone carrying professional explosives and a detonator infiltrated the airport premises. Sufficient evidence suggests that the intent was to cause an explosion using the aircraft. Furthermore, a cargo plane collided with an object believed to be another drone within the airport vicinity. On August 6, Germany’s federal prosecutor took charge of the investigation.

The Federal Criminal Police Office is leading the inquiry under the authority of the federal prosecutor. The responsible party remains unidentified publicly, and officials have refrained from assigning blame publicly as investigations continue. This incident has renewed focus on safeguarding airports and critical infrastructure, with German officials calling for faster coordination among federal agencies, state authorities, and security organizations managing drone-related threats.

Research hub dedicated to drone threat mitigation

Germany inaugurated a Technology Center for Drone Security on August 18 at the German Aerospace Center’s Cochstedt site. The facility leverages research capabilities from the organization’s Braunschweig location. It will conduct tests of drone detection and defence technologies under realistic operational conditions. The German Aerospace Center plans to invest over 10 million euros and create up to 40 new jobs. This center will serve as a nexus for researchers, security agencies, and companies developing counter-drone systems.

Alongside this new facility, Germany’s Joint Counter-Drone Centre continues to coordinate information sharing and threat assessments among federal and state authorities. The federal police’s powers related to drone detection and defence have also been updated. Dobrindt pointed out that the rapid pace of technological change necessitates continuous development and testing of new systems. The current government program integrates operational police units, coordinated security evaluations, and dedicated research efforts to strengthen defenses against unauthorized and potentially dangerous drones.
