VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is preparing BEACONSAT, the country’s first military satellite and its largest domestically developed spacecraft to date. The satellite will detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems, including GPS and Galileo. Austria plans to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project focuses on identifying jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and gathering data on when and where navigation systems face disruption.

BEACONSAT will serve as a technology demonstrator within a multi-year research and development program. Jamming involves radio interference that blocks or degrades satellite navigation signals. Spoofing sends false navigation information that can cause receivers to calculate incorrect positions. GATE Space, a space technology firm based in Schwechat, is responsible for leading the BEACONSAT project and overseeing the entire mission. The company, established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to perform maneuvers in orbit. For the BEACONSAT mission, GATE Space provides the propulsion system, satellite structure, and thermal management technology. The company has conducted more than 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Austrian technological innovations at the core of the satellite project
Key systems for Austria’s inaugural military satellite are supplied by other European firms. Graz-based IGASPIN offers technology designed to detect and analyze GNSS interference with high accuracy. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project combines commercial space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has also supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency plays a role in supporting and co-financing the initiative through its ESA Marketplace program, aimed at technology demonstrations. This program enables commercially available space technologies to be tested in security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstration platform rather than an operational satellite system. The data collected will focus on interference impacting satellite navigation signals from orbit, and the insights gained will feed into the Defence Ministry’s efforts to develop military space capabilities.
Integration into Austria’s expanding space program
Austria’s Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated space services unit responsible for satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is an integral part of this evolving structure, specifically targeting navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions expanding Austria’s role from merely using space services to operating space infrastructure and systems. This strategy was adopted in 2023, with implementation planned through 2035 and beyond.
The scheduled launch for BEACONSAT remains in February 2027, with a Falcon 9 set to carry the satellite into orbit. Following deployment, the spacecraft will collect and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research objectives. The project involves collaboration between Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology firms. It will mark Austria’s first military satellite mission, utilizing domestically developed systems to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
