ROME, ITALY / RankWire.AI / – In 2026, Italy experienced its hottest summer since 1950, with an average temperature across the nation reaching 24.3 degrees Celsius. The National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy announced that this figure surpasses the previous summer record set in 2003, which had an average of 23.6 degrees Celsius. The calculation for 2026 encompasses June through August, based on temperatures measured two metres above ground level. This data places this summer at the top of Italy’s 76-year temperature records.

Italy summer 2026 becomes hottest in records since 1950
    1. Italy’s 2026 summer heat set a national temperature record in data dating to 1950.

August showed the most intense heat, with an average temperature of 25.6 degrees Celsius nationwide. This surpassed the August average of 1951-1980 by 5.2 degrees and was 3.5 degrees above the August norm for 1991-2020. The National Research Council’s Institute for Bioeconomy stated that August 2026 broke earlier monthly records of 24.6 degrees in 2024 and 24.0 degrees in 2017. The climate dataset used for Italy’s temperature analysis is ECMWF’s ERA5-Land.

Both July and August of 2026 rank as the hottest months recorded in the dataset, according to the institute’s heat maps. These months followed a record-breaking spring, during which Italy’s national average temperature reached 12.1 degrees Celsius. The same temperature was recorded in spring 2024, matching the seasonal record. From January through August, every month in 2026 was warmer than its counterpart in 2025, extending Italy’s elevated temperatures over much of the calendar year.

    August Sets New Temperature Records

Temperature anomalies have been widespread across Italy during the first eight months of 2026. Approximately 70% of the country experienced anomalies exceeding 1 degree Celsius, with about 40% surpassing 2 degrees. The most significant anomalies appeared in the northwestern plains and along the Apennines, regions that include large expanses of cultivated land. These higher temperatures and drought conditions impacted some agricultural zones during this period. Major cities such as Rome, Florence, and Turin also endured repeated heatwaves in June, July, and August.

The record is based on ERA5-Land data from ECMWF, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. This dataset provides land-surface climate information dating back to 1950. Researchers used this data to compare Italy’s temperatures over the full period. Italy’s summer average of 24.3 degrees exceeded the 2003 benchmark by 0.7 degrees, while August’s 25.6-degree reading beat the 2024 monthly record by 1.0 degree. All temperature measurements refer to air temperature at two metres above the surface.

Widespread Heat Across Italy Confirmed by Climate Data

The broader Mediterranean region also experienced exceptional heat during the summer of 2026. A separate analysis associated with Italy’s National Research Council revealed that sea-surface temperatures in the Mediterranean averaged about 27 degrees Celsius in July, the highest for that month since 1993. The analysis further found that 79% of the Mediterranean Sea experienced at least one significant marine heatwave. These marine measurements are distinct from the land-temperature data used to establish Italy’s national summer record.

Italy’s record temperature period occurred amid extensive summer heat across Europe. European climate assessments describe the continent as the world’s fastest-warming region in recent decades. Droughts and wildfires affected various parts of Europe during the 2026 summer, with Italy experiencing months of above-average temperatures. The season included the hottest July and August in the temperature dataset, establishing summer 2026 as Italy’s most torrid meteorological summer since the ERA5-Land series began in 1950.
